Rizal, an ophthalmologist by profession, was a major figure of the Propaganda Movement in Europe which advocated for political reform within the Captaincy General of the Philippines; upon Spanish accusations of rebellion, he was executed in 1896 and became a symbol for the cause of Philippine independence.

    Gregorio was a prolific writer of textbooks and biographies throughout his life,[2] and had written about Rizal for more than 50 years before the publication of Jose Rizal;[3] he has been called by historian Ambeth Ocampo "the most popular textbook historian of his generation."[4] Gregorio and Sonia Zaide together wrote the biography with the purpose of replacing the former's previous college textbooks on
